What is it?: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADHD, is a personality disorder that causes inattentiveness, impulsiveness, over activity or a combination of.

What causes it?: Though there is no known cause of ADHD it is suspected to be a problem in brain chemistry that differs from those without it. It is also suspected to run in families.

Signs and Symptoms:
  • Hyperactivity
    • Fidgets or plays with hands and feet.
    • Leaves seat when expected to sit
    • Difficulty playing quietly
  • Inattentiveness:
    • Not being able to pay attention in class.
    • Does not seem to listen.
    • Easily Distracted.
  • Impulsive behavior
    • Can't wait turn.
    • Blurts out answers.
    • Interrupts others or intrudes on conversations.

Public Perception: It is a general belief that kids with ADD or ADHD are just a product of being spoiled or immature or lacking in manners and that they come from homes where kids are allowed to do as they please or parents don't care. Though anyone with the disease will tell you different, this is a wide belief.

Treatments Available: Treatments for ADHD and ADD involves medications, therapy or a combination of the two. Research has suggested that combination treatments lead to the best outcomes. Other ways include Psychotherapy or support groups made up of other children with ADHD.
